Wii Play: Motion Hitting this Summer

Today Nintendo shock announced a sequel to their smash hit Wii play.

Wii Play: Motion is set to release in the Americas, June 13th and will feature 12 new mini games. As the name suggests, Nintendo will also be bundling in a Black Wii Remote with Wii Motion Plus built in.

It is unclear whether it will keep any of the older mini games as ‘best hits’ ala Wii Sport Resort, but from the little info we do have – it seems that it will involve some ‘whack a mole’ type action as well something to with an Umbrella. (!?) Seeing that the title will not launch before E3, It is safe to assume that Nintendo will demo this game on stage at their press conference on June 7th.

Currently there is no UK release date for the title.

Personally I thought the only real reason to buy the original Wii play was to get a Wii remote and a game for a £5.  Apart from the nostalgic trip of playing Duck Hunt on your TV again and the frustrating yet somewhat enjoyable Table Tennis – the game did little than serve to demo the uses of the Wii Remote. Which Wii Sports and WarioWare: Smooth moves did a far better job of doing.

Wii Sports: Resort already showed up what can be done with Wii Motion Plus, so it will be interesting to see how Nintendo has further refined the marriage of its technology and software.  I’ m guessing we will get more games types that will be applicable to scenarios that Link may find himself in Skyward Sword.

What do you think? Did you enjoy WiiPlay? Does it need a sequel? Or is Nintendo making one final push to the masses before the inevitable Wii 2?  A Wii Price cut at E3 may help things along nicely.

UPDATE. Straight from Nintendo.

“With the June 13 launch of Wii Play: Motion, Wii owners will be twisting, turning and enjoying themselves like never before, whether they’re newcomers to the console or have already discovered the fun of the popular Wii Play game. From catching a gust of wind by tilting an umbrella to fending off garden pests by swinging a mallet, each of the 12 included games will have players smiling wide as they use their Wii Remote Plus controller (or Wii Remote with Wii MotionPlus™ accessory) in a variety of interesting, sometimes unexpected ways. Wii Play: Motion comes packaged with a Wii Remote Plus controller – which combines the original Wii Remote controller with the precision of Wii MotionPlus – to deliver great value, precise motion control and immersive social fun that anyone in the household can pick up and instantly enjoy.”
