Details on new Super Mario 3DS game
At the beginning of March, Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata announced a new Super Mario game for the 3DS. Not much was revealed except from a logo, depicting the letter ‘O’ from Mario with a tail, suggesting an appearance of the Tanooki (racoon) suit from Super Mario 3. The inclusion of the Tanooki suit has now been confirmed by Shigeru Miyamoto in an interview in London, “the tail you mentioned on the logo – it’s what you think it is,” said Miyamoto, “You probably know what’s going to happen using that character.” In Super Mario 3 the Tanooki suit enabled Mario to turn into Tanooki Mario, giving him the ability to fly for small periods of time. It could also temporarily turn Mario into an invincible statue. Are you happy to hear of the return of the Tanooki suit? I definitely am!
The game is being developed at Nintendo’s EAD studio in Tokyo by the same team who developed Super Mario Galaxy and the sequel Super Mario Galaxy 2 for Wii. Miyamoto described the new game a cross between Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario 64 (an excellent N64 – one of my personal favourites). He told interviewers that it’s a difficult collaboration to explain and that the game would be playable at E3 to give people a better understanding of what the new Super Mario 3DS has in store for us.
Miyamoto also mentioned that the game is to be expected this year and is also “completely original”. It looks like Nintendo are really pulling out the stops this year to make 2011 a memorable year for Nintendo, so what else do they have up their sleeves?
