New Console To Be Unveiled At E3

It has been confirmed today by Nintendo of Japan, that there will be a successor to the popular Wii in 2012, but most importantly, this new console will be show-cased at the E3 expo in Los Angeles 7th-9th of June. This news comes after weeks of speculation about the codenamed ‘Project Café’ rocketed around the internet. While most suspect the console to be called ‘Wii2’, Nintendo are just describing it as the ‘Wii successor system’.

Here you can read Nintendo’s full message:

Nintendo Co., Ltd. has decided to launch in 2012 a system to succeed Wii, which the company has sold 86.01 million units on a consolidated shipment basis between its launch in 2006 and the end of March 2011.

We will show a playable model of the new system and announce more specifications at the E3 Expo, which will be held June 7-9, 2011, in Los Angeles.

Sales of this new system have not been included in the financial forecasts announced today for the fiscal term ending March 2012.

IGN revealed on Thursday that its sources were telling them that this new console was codenamed ‘Project Café’:

According to sources with knowledge of the project, Nintendo’s next console could have a retail price of anywhere between $350 and $400 based on manufacturing costs, and will ship from Taiwanese manufacturer, Foxconn, this October, putting the earliest possible retail release anywhere between mid-October and early November.

However, Nintendo could also opt to build up a sizable supply of the system and allocate more time for software and games development by launching in early 2012. Similarly, Nintendo could attempt to lower the retail price of the system with lower profit margins to make the price more alluring.

It wasn’t revealed by Nintendo on what the specifications would be for ‘Project Café’, and IGN believe that the new console could have more horsepower than the current Wii. Alot of us have been wondering if this all new console will rival the performance of the PS3 and Xbox 360. And if IGN’s sources are correct, we have our answer waiting for us in 2012.

So, who’s excited?
