Excitebike 3D to be the first 3D Classic for 3DS

Nintendo’s 3D Classics is set to bring 3D remakes of classic games to 3DS via the 3DS firmware update due in May. The program, like the Wii’s Virtual Console, will bring classic games to gamers to play now, but the games in the 3D Classics range will be manipulated to take advantage of the 3DS’ capabilities.

Nintendo President Sartoru Iwata confirmed during their recent investors briefing that the first of these games will be NES side scrolling racer Excitebike, when gamers download the update in Japan. There is no word whether the same will apply to Europe as yet, but hopefully this will be the case; as the icing on the cake is that this first title will be available for free! It’s clearly a way to entice people to download more; but I’ll certainly be going for it if there are enough quality titles. Perhaps other 8-bit and possibly 16-bit titles will be made available in this way? 3D remakes of the original Super Mario Bros.? The first Legend of Zelda adventure? Super Mario Kart? What are you hoping to see re-mastered in 3D?

The 3DS firmware update due in May is expected to include the web browser, functionality for transferring DSi Ware games to your 3DS, as well as the highly anticipated eShop with the Virtual Console, allowing players to download titles from Gameboy and Gameboy Colour.
