Preview: London 2011 MCM Expo

If you haven’t heard of it, the London MCM Expo is a biannual convention, combining arguably the greatest past-times known to man; video games, movies, anime, manga, Japanese pop-culture and Western comics. Oh, and while you are there you might notice the odd cosplayer too. The event runs across a three day period, so look out for one or two of us at Nintendo Scene, as members of our team will be making an appearance as part of the press to give you an in-depth, hands-on coverage of the convention.

Last October there was a noticeable Nintendo presence at MCM; with a few preview demos of games such as the hit, first-person shooter GoldenEye 007 (Wii and DS, 2010) and other DS titles. However the were no 3DS consoles or games to try out; something which would have definitely sparked a lot of interest over the weekend.

This year Nintendo Universe have reported that MCM will be playing host to eight leading publishers including; Nintendo, Capcom, Warner Bros., THQ, Square Enix, Tecmo Koei, PQube and Atari with more to be confirmed in the run up to the event. MCV have disclosed that GameSport UK will be hosting the MCM Games Stage, with developer and publisher panels, as well as live podcasts direct from the show. Capcom will debut their European release of the new Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition at the convention, while other publishers have yet to publicize what games they will be showcasing this year. I would expect Nintendo to be providing Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, Kid Icarus: Uprising and maybe a few more 3DS game demos, although what I would really love to see is a playable version of Skyward Sword on the Wii stand.

MCM will also play host to the stars of the science-fiction animated TV series Futurama, as well as featuring a showcase of the upcoming Warner Bros. release of Green Lantern – a movie based on the long-running series of DC comics. Last October the MCM Expo previewed the new Directors Cut Blu Ray edition of Avatar, which hauled in a large audience. Our very own Nintendo Scene staff writer StealthBuda was present at the last convention, and for him the best aspect of the Expo was the Comic Book Alliance (CBA), who dedicate themselves to the active promotion of home-grown British comics, graphic novels and webcomics. One of the founders, Helen McCarthy, is renowned for her anime reference books such as The Anime Movie Guide and The Anime Encyclopaedia: A Guide to Japanese Animation Since 1917 and who will hopefully be present at this year’s convention.

The event will be running from the 27th to the 29th May, so expect a full day-by-day report of the convention in the near future…
