StreetPass and SpotPass Guide
This is your one stop guide to StreetPass and SpotPass on the Nintendo 3DS.

___________________________________________________________
- What is StreetPass?
StreetPass is a feature available on Nintendo’s 3DS portable gaming system. When two Nintendo 3DS units pass each other they exchange some limited information and can play mini games against each other without input from either user.
- What’s the range of StreetPass?
30m
- How long does it take to StreetPass another 3DS?
It depends, it can be instant, but users have reported that it can take up to quarter of an hour and sometimes not at all. It appears to depend on which software is using StreetPass and if you’re StreetPassing lots of users with multiple pieces of software. Sometimes it can take some time to catch up.
- How do I know I’ve got a StreetPass hit?
With the system closed the light in the top right hand corner of your 3DS will illuminate with a green LED, with the system open, in the main 3DS menu, a small green circle will appear in the bottom right hand corner of the software icon.
- Do all 3DS games have StreetPass?
No, only some and these are listed in our Street and SpotPass games and software guide below.
- How many StreetPasses can I get per day?
However many you can find, there’s no daily limit, but each piece of software has an upper limit of stored StreetPass hits before you have to clear down the software to obtain more; the upper limit figure for each piece of software is listed in the StreetPass Game Guide below.
- I get to 10 StreetPass hits and then stop, why is this?
Each piece of software has an upper limit of stored StreetPass hits before you have to clear down the software to obtain more; the upper limit figure for each piece of software is listed in the StreetPass Game Guide below.
- Where’s the best place to StreetPass?
The obvious answer is at a StreetPass event, but a small guide to this is available below in the Guide to StreetPass section if you want a more detailed response.
- Can I StreetPass someone multiple times just by walking past?
Yes, but reports suggest the 3DS will wait on average about 8 hours between each hit. Some users report a shorter length of time and others longer, but over a day it looks like an average of 3 StreetPass hits per user, which averages at every 8 hours.
- How long between each StreetPass with the same user?
Reports suggest the 3DS will wait on average about 8 hours between each hit. Some users report a shorter length of time and others longer, but over a day it looks like an average of 3 StreetPass hits per user, which averages at every 8 hours.
- Does StreetPass work straight out of the box?
Not straight away, you have to create a data slot for each piece of software before you can begin collecting StreetPass hits.
- How do I turn on StreetPass?
When you use software for the first time, it will usually ask if you wish to activate StreetPass for that software, click yes and it will create a Data Slot. This allows you to control which software StreetPass is active for, whilst controlling what information is passed between systems. If the software hasn’t asked if you wish to activate StreetPass, go in to the software’s network settings and there should be an option there for StreetPass Settings.
- Can I turn StreetPass off?
Yes, System Settings > Data Management > StreetPass Management > Then select the software you wish to deactivate StreetPass on > Then click on Deactivate StreetPass.
___________________________________________________________
- What is SpotPass?
SpotPass is the 3DS’s ability to receive game updates and add-ons as well as system updates and extras while the system is in sleep mode.
- Is SpotPass safe?
Yes, your 3DS will only download SpotPass updates for software you allow it to, and even before then, Nintendo will have tested and authorised these updates before making them available for you.
- Does every game have SpotPass?
No, only certain pieces of software, these are detailed in the Street and SpotPass games and software guide below.
- How do I SpotPass?
SpotPass works automatically when your 3DS is connected to the internet, either through your own WiFi at home or work or through one of many WiFi hotspots that your 3DS will automatically link to.
- How do I setup SpotPass?
SpotPass is setup during initial system configuration, or during setup for a piece of software. But if you opted not to enable SpotPass, you can do it through the following options: System Settings > Internet Settings > SpotPass > Automatic Software Downloads > Then click Yes. Each piece of software will have its own SpotPass settings within Network Settings.
- How do I turn SpotPass on?
If you opted not to enable SpotPass, you can do it through the following options: System Settings > Internet Settings > SpotPass > Automatic Software Downloads > Then click Yes. Each piece of software will have its own SpotPass settings within Network Settings.
- How do I know I’ve got SpotPass content?
If you have a SpotPass notification and the system is closed, the light in the top right hand corner of your 3DS will illuminate with a blue LED, with the system open, in the main 3DS menu, a small blue circle will appear in the bottom right hand corner of the software icon. You don’t always get the blue LED for individual software SpotPass content; it is only usually for a SpotPass notification in your Notifications listing on the top bar of your 3DS main menu.
- What’s the difference between a SpotPass notification and SpotPass content?
A SpotPass notification is simply a notice that appears in the Notifications listing on the top bar of your 3DS main menu. SpotPass content is the content that is actually downloaded through SpotPass for a piece of software. An example of this is the recent SpotPass content for Dead or Alive Dimensions. Each Friday a notification was published detailing the SpotPass content for DOAD over the week. The SpotPass content was then downloaded each day without further notification other than the blue circle on the bottom right hand corner of the game icon.

This part of the guide is based around StreetPassing in the UK, mainly London, if anyone outside of this area would like to contribute to this part of the guide please contact via the Contact Us page on the website.
StreetPass Events
By far the best place to StreetPass is at a dedicated StreetPass event, StreetPass London run an event nearly every month at the London Eye and DS: London, while more social than gaming run events twice a month. Nintendo Scene has also run several successful events for game releases or Special Events such as the first International StreetPass day event, as well as London’s first ever StreetPass event. At these London events, you’re looking to get at least 20 – 30 StreetPass hits, this has been the regular turnout number so far, but this can only increase with some of the big game release’s this year.
- London’s first StreetPass Event – 27 Mar 2011
- The Nintendo Spot First StreetPass Event – 16 Apr 2011
- 3DS StreetPass Joins DS London – 16 Apr 2011
- Nintendo Scene’s Dublin StreetPass Event – 23 Apr 2011
- The Nintendo Spot Second StreetPass Event – 01 May 2011
- Nintendo Scene’s Dead or Alive Post Launch Tournament – 21 May 2011
- Nintendo Scene’s International StreetPass Day Event – 25 Jun 11
- The Nintendo Spot Resident Evil Mercenaries Post Launch Event – 02 Jul 11
- Nintendo Scene’s Flash Mob StreetPass Event – 09 Jul 11
- IGN 100th Podcast Party – Aug 11
- IGN’s First Streetpass Event – 08 Sep 11
Gaming/Film/Comic/Anime/Cosplay Conventions
So far this year, I’ve attended Kapow and MCM for Nintendo Scene and at both of these I got a huge amount of StreetPass hits, and this was in the early days of the Nintendo 3DS release, I see this number increasing dramatically towards the end of the year.
As these events usually have lots going on, it’s harder to clear down your StreetPass hits quickly, you end up missing out on a lot of hits unless you have your 3DS open all the time, which is your call, alternatively even standing outside of these events, or walking up and down the queue would get you a huge amount of hits.
Please see Nintendo Scenes Events guide for details of future and past events.
Other ways to StreetPass
Other than just carrying around your 3DS all the time, there is no easy guide to StreetPass hits, shops like John Lewis, Game and HMV usually have 3DS units on demo in their stores which can give a few quick StreetPass hits, but if you live outside of London or any built up area you’re probably not going to get a great amount of hits unless you have friends with a Nintendo 3DS.
If you are struggling for hits, try organising a StreetPass event meet in your area on Facebook, you might find that there are more people than you think also after a StreetPass fix. If you are organising or attending a StreetPass meet for the first time, make sure it’s in a very public place, especially if you’re young, if possible take a friend or parent with you the first time you go until you know a few people there. You can see from our photos of the StreetPass London events at the London Eye, there are always hundreds of people around in that area, making it very safe for everyone attending.

4. StreetPass and SpotPass Software and Game Guide
Mii Plaza
StreetPass Upper Limit – 10
StreetPass
As you get StreetPass hits from other Nintendo 3DS users, you will build up your Mii Plaza population, which you can browse through at any time after and look at limited profile information from each Mii. As you meet users for a second and then third time, you can pass a personal message, rather than your generic StreetPass Mii message and then rate the other user’s Mii.
The Mii’s your meet also allow you to complete the two StreetPass Quests and the Puzzle Swap challenge.
Puzzle Swap allows you to collect pieces from several different images in order to complete them and view a 3D image. You collect pieces by picking one from the Mii’s you StreetPass, any pieces you have already collected are available to other users, and theirs to you. You can also use play coins to collect a randomly generated puzzle piece from the puzzles you have left to complete, but unfortunately they are not always the pieces you need and any duplicate pieces are lost.
The two StreetPass Quests allow you to battle ghosts through a series of rooms, collecting Hats that you Mii can wear. The Mii’s you meet allow you to battle these ghosts with sword or magic and the t-shirt that a Mii is wearing dictates what magic they have available. The more you StreetPass the same person, the higher level their Mii becomes in your StreetPass Quest and the stronger their attacks and damage are. Mii’s max out at level 7. The latest firmware update now allows you to combine Mii’s into teams that allow you to make stronger attacks and use upgraded magic abilities. The option to buy potions has also been added, which allows you to negate some of the abilities of the new higher powered ghosts.
Points to Note
The Mii Plaza’s upper limit for StreetPasses is 10, as soon as your StreetPass Notification menu lists 10 StreetPass hits in the Mii Plaza you have to clear them out before you can receive any more. You have to clear them out by going in to the Mii Plaza and activating the Mii’s in the Puzzle Swap and StreetPass Quest mini-games. If you meet the Mii’s and don’t use them in either of the mini-games before you exit the Mii Plaza or click on the purple arrow in the Mii Plaza to meet new Mii’s, you will lose the ability to use those Mii’s in either mini-game.
So as soon as you hit the upper limit of 10 Mii Plaza hits, go into the Mii plaza and play through bother mini-games with those Mii’s before doing anything else.
Spotpass only
Spotpass
Nintendo 3D TV runs you through the Spotpass set up when after you first download it, if however you wish to disabled or enable the Spotpass feature the options can be found in Settings within the Nintendo 3D TV software.
Nintendo 3D TV allows users to automatically download video content as it is released.
The video releases so far have included clips from Sky 3D, Oscar’s Oasis (An animated feature), Magic 3D, Circus 3D, Redbull extreme sports clips as well as clips from the Zelda Symphony rehearsals.
StreetPass Upper Limit – 99
StreetPass
Passing someone with 3DS Sound enabled will allow you to swap track meta data (track name, year, artist, genre) for the music that you have set in your StreetPass list. Tracks are never exchanged with anyone, just the meta data from your playlist and is then used in the music match / hit parade.
Note that you will need to have a few hits with Nintendo 3DS Sound for anything to appear and if your songs do not have the metadata then this function will not work. It is reported that you don’t get as many hits with this as with Mii Plaza because users are not setting it up.
Thanks to Super Jezmeralda for this info.
StreetPass Upper Limit – 8
StreetPass
StreetPass in Dead or Alive Dimensions comes in the form of a Throwdown Battle with each StreetPass hit you get. As you play Dead or Alive Dimension and increase in rank, the software builds up an AI StreetPass Fighter for you, which is then sent to other StreetPass users to battle and theirs to you.
You can access these battles by clicking on Throwdown from the main menu. Select the opponent you want to fight and begin a best of three battles. If you win, you get points towards your rank depending on the difference between theirs and your rank, e.g. if your rank is higher than theirs, you get fewer points and if theirs is higher than yours, you get more points towards your rank total. If you win, you also get a figure to go in your 3D showcase.

Streetpass in Mario Kart 7, once set up via the Mario Kart Channel on the main game menu, allows you to race against your opponents ghost Mii’s and view their Streetpass data. Mario Kart 7 assigns each player a title based on their play-style, examples of which are Boost Jumper, Quick Starter, Dolphin, Shell Shark and Star Racer (rumours are that this title also affects the AI of your Mii during Streetpass races). Each players profile shows their VR, Wins and Losses, their total coins collected and total Mario Kart 7 streetpass hits. Racing against

StreetPass
To battle using Samurai Warriors in StreetPass mode, you first need to ensure StreetPass is enabled in Network settings within the game menu. You then need to select a team of four Warriors from the full cast of the game (The only restriction on this is that the total of the character’s ranks cannot exceed 20). You also need to set a formation for your characters to fight in (the formation gives you bonus’ or penalties depending on the formation of your opponents warriors). And then finally you need to select a weapon that your opponent will be given after the StreetPass battle (You don’t lose the weapon you select and win or lose; you will get your opponents weapon).
The battle takes place with the warriors taking it in turns to attack each other in a simulated battle. Both players receive the weapon their opponent selected and if you build up a winning streak, you can get bonuses. You will also increase the favour with the warriors you select to take part in the battle.

Super Street Fighter IV
StreetPass Upper Limit – 10
StreetPass
To set up Super Street Fighter IV StreetPass you must first enable StreetPass in the games menu. You can find this through Figurine Collection > StreetPass. You then need to assemble your team from your figurine collection. You can build up your figurine collection by gaining Figure Points (FP) by winning rounds in Super Street Fighter IV or by winning rounds in StreetPass battles. Figure Points are used to buy figurines in the Figure Slots. You can also trade figures locally with other players.
There are seven ranks of figures and multiple figures with varying stats within each rank. Your team should consist of 5 fighters with a collection rank figure of no more than 20. Generally, the higher the rank the more powerful the figure, but that is not always the case.
It can be time consuming, but go through your entire figure collection picking the characters with the best stats for Attack and Hit Points. Characters with bars of Ultra Combo and Super Combo will be better than characters with similar Attack and Hit Point stats.
Once you have your team, think about team placement. Your fighters will fight in the order you set against your opponent’s fighters in their order, so you could find your rank 1 character coming up against a rank 7.
Once you’ve received a StreetPass hit from another 3DS user, access the data through Figurine Collection > StreetPass > StreetPass Log. Select the battle from the list and it will run through a simulated combat using the figurines. The figures don’t actually attack each other; you will simply see the figurines bash each other until one is knocked off the screen.
You will receive Figure Points for each win, even if you lose overall out of the five fights. These Figure Points can then be used to buy more figures in the Figure Slots.

Street Pass upper limit: 8
Swaps track time with other 3DS Ridge Racer owners where they have it enabled. This is under the Single player / StreetPass menu. If you beat their time, you get 500 – 2500 points.
I have only ever had a handful of these hits (compared to hundreds of Mii Plaza hits). Maybe more unlocks later but this cart had cooled down substantially as I have focussed on ZOoT 🙂
—
Nintendo 3DS Sound
Street Pass upper limit: [I forget]
When you pass someone with this enabled, you swap track meta data (track name, year, artist, genre) of the music that you have set to be in your StreetPass list. You never exchange tracks with anyone. the meta data about your playlist that is swapped is then used in the music match / hit parade.
Note that you need to have a few hits on this for anything to appear. Also, if your songs don’t have the metadata then this function will not work. I don’t get as many hits (33 users vs.161 users) with this as with Mii Plaza because I suspect that people don’t set it up and you don’t seem to get anything from it initially. I’ve only used it a few times as a music device.
If you are going to a StreetPass meet, put a few of your favourite tracks on here.
By far, the top of my hit parade is Still Alive by Jonathan Coulton (Portal OST).
