Free Games For Early 3DS Owners

People who bought their 3DS’s early on are to receive some free games from Nintendo as a reward for their loyalty.

Nintendo are launching the ‘Nintendo 3DS Ambassador’ programme. If you own a 3DS and have connected to the e-shop before midnight 11 August you will be automatically enrolled.

Your role would entitle you to play a load of free classic games available on 1 September (before their official release). These include 10 free NES games such as Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Bros, Donkey Kong Jnr, Ballon Fight, Ice Climber.

As well this, a bunch of GBA games are set for release by the end of the year. including Metroid Fusion, Mario Kart: Super Circuit and Super Mario Advance 3 among others. There are no plans as yet to release these GBA games as a normal purchase.

This all comes as Nintendo announce a price drop in a bid to boost sales. If you already own a 3DS this sounds like a great way to enjoy some classic games for free. And if you haven’t already got one, now is the time to pick one up!

Well according to the statement it sounds like you only need to connect to the e-shop…

“The 20 free games are available to anyone who owns a Nintendo 3DS system and uses a wireless broadband Internet signal to connect to the Nintendo eShop at least once before 11:59 p.m. Eastern time on Aug. 11.”

Seems like they are doing this to soften the blow of the price drop to anyone who has forked out the original £200 plus.

      • Well, there’s a point in the statement too.. saying, that these free games won’t (no plans) be released for purchase. For Nintendo fans it could be seen as a selling point to buy the console whatever the price before the deadline as you won’t be able to get the games any other way. Very interesting and good of Nintendo to go to this length.

Has this Ambassador programme definitely been confirmed for the UK?

As for the price, so many retailers are selling 3DSs well below £230 (Amazon selling them for £169) that I’m not sure if a “price-drop” here will make too much of a difference? Maybe I’m wrong… would they drop even further – £140 perhaps?

Yes, this appears to be a global strategy.
Good point on the UK Pricing. The new price will again only be a guide, it’s up to retailers to set their own price. It will be interesting to see how low some will go!

The best part of the Ambassador program is that the games are going to be free. I know if I had to pay to play Zelda again I wouldn’t have but being as it won’t cost me anything, why wouldn’t I give it a second look. We all know Nintendo eventually will put these games on the open market. They always throw that “not at the moment” thing in to make people feel like they’re getting something special.

    • Valid point. And yeah,.. Nintendo will at some point most probably sell those games in some way or another. Never the less. It is going to be a download fest when these games are made available.
