Written Apology Letter From Iwata

Recently Nintendo dropped a bomb by announcing that there would be a price drop on the 4 month old Nintendo 3DS system. Here we have an apology from Nintendo President Satoru Iwata in regards to Nintendo’s recent decisions on the price cut and the 3DS Ambassador Program.

To Those Customers Who Bought A Nintendo 3DS Before The Price Change

Greetings, everyone. This is Satoru Iwata from Nintendo.

Thank you very much for purchasing a Nintendo 3DS.

We have just announced a price drop for the Nintendo 3DS system effective on August 11 (August 12 in North America).

In the past, there have been price drops for video game systems some time after their release in order to broaden the user base further. However, never before has Nintendo chosen to issue such a dramatic price drop less than 6 months after a system release.

We are all too keenly aware that those of you who supported us by purchasing the 3DS in the beginning may feel betrayed and criticize this decision.

This unprecedented timing for a price cut is because the situation has changed greatly since we originally launched the 3DS. We decided it was necessary to take this drastic step in order to ensure that large numbers of users will continue to enjoy the 3DS in the future.

If the software creators and those on the retail side are not confident that the Nintendo 3DS is a worthy successor to the DS and will achieve a similarly broad (user) base, it will be impossible for the 3DS to gain popularity, acquire a wide range of software, and eventually create the product cycle necessary for everyone to be satisfied with the system.

Those customers who purchased the 3DS at the very beginning are extremely important to us. We know that there is nothing we can do to completely make up for the feeling that you are being punished for buying the system early. Still, we would like to offer the following as a sign of our appreciation to you.

We feel a strong responsibility to develop the 3DS as a platform — to ensure that, in the end, everyone is satisfied; we will make every effort to do so.

Additionally, we know everyone is waiting for Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7. They are scheduled for release in November and December, respectively, so we ask for your patience until then.

Thank you again, and we look forward to your continued support.

    I appreciate the fact that Nintendo are apologetic about this price drop, and not just initiating it without any thought for us early adopters. Classy!

    Kind of surprised by this. When does anyone who is high up in an organization take the blame for something not going the way it was supposed to and then says they’re sorry for it not working out. Nintendo was already in the lead in my book and now with this, they took an even bigger lead. I didn’t buy right away, I bought it when Ocarina of Time came out but I still paid 250$. Will I be getting one of these letters in my mailbox?

      The humbling letter really says a lot about Nintendo as a company. Yes they do milk their IPs a lot, but they are always good quality games. Plus they look after their gamers too..

The title of this article makes it sound like he killed someone. 😉 Personally I’m still pleased to have been an early adopter as I’ve had a lot of fun with my 3DS these last few months, but the ambassador program line-up looks fantastic and the fact that they’re doing such a thing makes me feel valued as a customer and Nintendo supporter.

      It does look fantastic, there will be plenty of happy satisfied Nintendo gamers like us when we can download them! 🙂


    • I suppose when you think about it, it could well be the death of Nintendo in the portable gaming market. If the 3DS fails now, with the onslaught of the game apps from Apple and Sony’s persistence in the market with the Vita, this is a critical era for Nintendo. But I think Nintendo will put this right in the run-up to and after Christmas, with a posibly improved version to come next Year.

    I have had a lot of fun with my 3DS since launch, however I don’t think a few free games can make up for such a massive price difference so soon, especially as I’ve played most of the good ones from other platforms already.

    That said, I don’t want to see the platform fail and so if this is what they need to do to make it succeed…

    However, I think that to really compete with apple they need to dramatically improve the online store and to slash prices to be more in line with the iTunes app store.
