Nintendo announces DLC coming to 3DS

Nintendo has announced that paid-for Downloadable Content (DLC) will be coming to the 3DS in future. What this means is that developers will be able to offer additional content for their games to buy on the Nintendo eShop. Up till now, Nintendo has shied away from DLC, probably because many see it as controversial. In some cases its seen as developers selling you ‘unfinished’ games then demanding more money for content that should have been there in the first place. Nintendo has declared, however, that anything they themselves offer will consitute a meaningful addition to their games. Of course, they can’t make the same guarantees about third-party studios.

It’s an interesting move, especially given the 3DS’ Spotpass function essentially offering DLC for free for such games as Samurai Warriors: Chronicles (which just had its final addition recently) and Dead or Alive: Dimensions.

What do you think about DLC? A nice way to get more out of a game, or a cynical money-making scheme? Let us know in the comments below and on Twitter – @NintendoScene

I think it’s well intended and could be a force for good, but it will end up being a way to just make money for things that should’ve been their from day one. Shame…

I agree. Great idea, but could end up not being great. Although it works well on Xbox Live. The Fallout 3 and New Vegas DLCs are awesome and well worth the points value. If the DLCs are aof a good standard and add a lot to the game, they could be wrthwhile.

Of course, Fallout 3 and New Vegas were huge games already without their DLC. There are plenty of examples of exploitative crap out there, charging two or three pounds for a few extra costumes. Or horse armour. I hope Nintendo regulates things, and I hope this doesn’t mean the end of free Spotpass content for games.

I didn’t link it to spotpass. The Tecmo Koei Samurai Warriors Chronicles and Dead or Alive Dimensions spotpass updates were nothing short of epic. I suspect that if the option had been there, they might have been paid DLCs. Then again, Tecmo Koei are all about the players, so maybe not.

I’d be happy with just Netflix to be honest.
