The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword UK Launch Party

The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword Launch Party – London – 03 Nov 11

For those unfamiliar with the launch party concept, think of it like the movie premiere of the gaming world.  Although game reviews require more play than you’ll get in your average evening party, launch events allow the press to gather in like-minded company and play the game in a social environment whilst discussing it, as happened tonight.

Nintendo gathered us all in a beautiful refurbished Victorian house, which was kitted out Zelda style with green lights, foliage and Zelda stand ups and banners as well a beautiful painting covering one of the huge windows.  Around the outside of the room were Wii units running the Skyward Sword demo that has been doing the rounds.

The centre piece of the event were Claire and Liz, two Olympic Fencers hoping to make the team for London’s 2012 Olympics.  They started off the event by setting up the guests in practice equipment giving them a few fencing tips before allowing them to fence using sensor vests that register hits.

After a few rounds, the girls took part in a photo shoot, during which they fenced each other briefly, albeit it not I imagine to either of their full abilities.  Then the girls got to grips with sword fighting Zelda style on the Skyward Sword demo units.  I was pleased to see that when it goes down badly in Zelda, the reaction of professional swordfighters is exactly the same as everyone else’s, and all sense of combat technique is replaced with quick, violent and ultimately random swings of the Wii-mote.

The event was highly enjoyable and a huge thanks go to Nintendo from Nintendo Scene for inviting us.  It was lovely to meet Claire and Liz.  And I wish them both luck in the upcoming Olympic selection and ultimately, in the Olympics themselves.  I’ll be watching and rooting for them next year.

As before, more photos are available on our Facebook page.

The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword is available on the 18/11/11.  We’ll be covering both the London and the Nintendo World, New York (20/11/11) launch events live on the nights.

Skyward Sword is available in Standard and a Limited Edition package.
