PETA: ‘Mario Kills Tanooki’

It has emerged yesterday that the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, PETA in short, has launched a campaign against Mario. The complaint revolves around the Tanooki suit, where they believe that Mario wearing the Tanooki suit endorses animal cruelty. This was stated on their website:

When on a mission to rescue the princess, Mario has been known to use any means necessary to defeat his enemy — even wearing the skin of a raccoon dog to give him special powers.

Tanooki may be just a “suit” in Mario games, but in real life, tanuki are raccoon dogs who are skinned alive for their fur. By wearing Tanooki, Mario is sending the message that it’s OK to wear fur.

This claim is backed up by a Mario-style 2D side scrolling game, where you must help Tanooki “reclaim his fur”. Upon completing the game, you are rewarded with a “**** you Mario, this skin belongs to an animal’. A revolting way to attract people to their campaign. Just for their records, Mario doesn’t skin the animal, he transforms into it by picking up a magical leaf power up, but clearly they have opted for the more literal approach.Lets just hope they don’t see Mario wearing the Penguin suit in New Super Mario Bros. Wii! For anybody planning to visit the site (I will not do them a favour by linking to their site), just be aware that the video they are using to promote their ‘Save Raccoon Dogs’ is quite disturbing and may not be suitable for younger viewers.

As a vegetarian of many years and pet owner, are you kidding me ?!?

What a joke – mario is one of the most light hearted games series going! I’ll still be queuing for my copy on Friday.

Oh and how long before someone starts campaigning for ethical treatment of Bowser now…?

    • It’s crazy nuts. And I think their own website has more to answer to this accusation that Mario games themselves. For example the mockup game they have themselves some kind of sick mind. Shame on them, they are doing more harm to their of suggested cause. The people running that organisation need to consider their jobs. Shame.

It’s not like Mario has to kill then skin a tanuki to get the suit – he picks up a leaf for goodness sake!
