Wii U Games We’d Like To See: The Legend Of Zelda

In the run up to the release of the Wii U, Nintendo Scene are compiling a list of games that we’d like to see on the upcoming console each week. With me being a huge Legend of Zelda fan, of course this is my choice. I have been a massive fan of the series since playing A Link To The Past on the SNES and have been enchanted by the adventures of our green attired hero ever since.

I luckily got a hands on experience with the Wii U last weekend at the Eurogamer Expo, which gave me a proper insight as to what the Wii U GamePad can achieve. Myself and Stuart were playing multiplayer on Zelda Battle Quest, one of twelve Nintendo Land mini games. I was given the Gamepad during our play through, meaning I was the archer in our quest. With the GamePad I was able to turn 360 degrees, searching for hidden enemies that were not visible onscreen behind me and above me. This idea could easily be used in the next Zelda title. Spot enemies you may have passed, searching for hidden treasure, and also looking for those hard to find switches leading to secret areas or moving forward in the game.

In Zombi U, the GamePad is used as the player’s backpack, containing items and weapons. In Zelda this concept could be used for Link’s pouch containing various items such as his crossbow, bombs and hookshot. Maybe a new item will be revealed that will fully utilize the GamePad’s capabilities. What that item may be, who knows.  A real time inventory screen would be utterly essential, as for those of you who remember that horrid Water Temple in Ocarina of Time would agree. Let’s not speak about that experience, shall we.

MotionPlus is a pretty obvious one, as it was so successful in Skyward Sword. The controls were very intuitive, and genuinely lots of fun. Players had to be tactful when attacking enemies, as some had to be hit at certain points, so swinging your sword aimlessly sadly wasn’t going to work.

The next aspect I’ve thought long and hard about is how I would like the next Zelda title to look. From the trailer shown at E3, it’s looking likely that it will be heading towards the same style as Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword, which by the way is no problem whatsoever as it looks stunning in HD. However, am I the only one who would love a Wind Waker style Zelda game on the Wii U? It has been almost 3 years since we’ve seen cel-shaded style Link on Spirit Tracks, and a whopping 9 years since he was on a Nintendo home console. Bring him to Wii U Nintendo, please? Thanks.

The timeline of course needs to be considered too. Where will the next game in the series take off from? As much as I loved the the sky location of Skyloft in Skyward Sword, I would like to be back in Hyrule again. Just imagine how beautiful it would look. I can see the next game in the series being set in the Twilight Era, taking off from Twilight Princess. But that’s just me.

So, Zelda fans, I ask you this: Do you agree with anything I have mentioned? What would you like to see from the next title in the Legend of Zelda series?

  1. Great piece! As long as there is no voice acting then it’s fine by me! 😉

Any chance of a skyward sword remake, WITHOUT motion control?
