Nintendo Scene’s 2016 Wishlist
It’s no secret that Nintendo had a bit of a rocky year in 2015, suffering a fair few blows- but it wasn’t all bad, and we’ll try not to dwell too much on that as 2015 also held some fantastic moments and releases. After Reuben conjured the idea of a “Smash Gold Edition”; an NX port of Smash Wii U including all DLC and Wolf & Ice Climbers as unlockable characters, I pondered on what else could possibly be in store for us this year, so I asked around at Nintendo Scene for people to send me some predictions on what they think 2016 will bring us. I also set them another challenge, I wanted to know what they wanted to see this year. It can be as ludicrous or unlikely as possible, as long as it’s something they wish for.
2015 was a poor year for me and Nintendo; a lot of the games released left me greatly disappointed in one way or another, one instance being the “no friends allowed” initial Splatoon set-up. So, let’s just say that I’m going into 2016 with high hopes, and have a few predictions that will help this new year at least beat 2015.
Okay, the first hope I have is that the plethora of JRPGs out this year don’t disappoint. We have Final Fantasy Explorers, Bravely Second: End Layer, Fire Emblem: Fates and Project X Zone 2 all before the middle of the year; so if even one of these is fantastic, 2016 is a winner for me. That’s not forgetting that Shin Megami Tensei IV – Final is also out this year (in Japan, yeah, but I can dream for quick localisation).
We already know that Nintendo’s NX will be unveiled this year and E3, but that leads to my second hope. Please Nintendo, PLEASE, don’t mess this up. By this I mean, if that patent you registered for the touchscreen control pad is intended for NX, bury it now. This console has the potential to raise your profile after your arguably poor handling of Wii U; I’m looking forward to it, please don’t make the wait a waste.
First prediction, the new console Zelda will be a simultaneous release for both Wii U and NX. This isn’t too far of a stretch, seeing as Nintendo did this before with Twilight Princess. Basically, it doesn’t make sense for Nintendo to break their word that the new title will be coming to Wii U, but conversely it makes no sense to not bring it to their new console either. Also, regarding Zelda, I think we will hear something about it before E3, with more information coming during (what I predict will once again be) Nintendo’s Digital Event broadcast.
Second prediction, the NX will spend the end of the lifespans of both Wii U and 3DS. This may sound wild, but think about it. If the NX is, as it’s rumoured to be, a hybrid console, what would be the need for Nintendo to continue making games for two separate entities? Furthermore, it does fit in with Nintendo’s usual business model with handhelds of a few upgrades then and move to making that generation obsolete (after all the last GameBoy Advance model was released AFTER the first model of the DS). This would be a risky move, I’ll admit, but it could really pay off for the Big N.
What I’d really love to see from Nintendo this year is… More Mario Kart! DLC for MK8, Mario Kart ‘9’, 3DS, Wii U or ‘NX’… I really don’t mind what form it arrives in, so long as it does so. A staple Nintendo title that never fails to deliver, is the epitome of Nintendo gaming and a sure fire hit – it will make my gaming year to see this spring up in a Nintendo Direct.
I’m looking forward to Star Fox Zero (finally!) and of course Zelda Wii U (obviously!) in 2016. I’m excited for Fire Emblem Fates too – this will be my first step in the world of Fire Emblem, after being introduced to this world via Smash Bros. I’m sure more Lego Dimensions, Lego Avengers and the inevitable Disney Infinity instalment will also take up a good chunk of my gaming time this year.
But what I really want to see is the ‘NX’, and I want to be blown away by it. Handheld, home console hybrid, whatever it turns out to be, I’m just hoping it’s not a disappointment. A couple of essential launch titles that really show off what it can do, some sort of unified account system that rewards its members and a not too distant launch date and I’m sure I’ll be on board from day one.
Given 2016 marks the 30th Anniversary of the Kid Icarus series, I would love, love, to see something done about this. Special pins (no Badge Arcade, you don’t count for this, go away). Some kind of pixel/classic Pit amiibo, a port of Uprising to the Wii U. An entirely new Kid Icarus game. Imagine.
I’m also looking forward to the long anticipated Yooka Laylee. I’m really hoping an amiibo will come with this release too, and I want it to look good. I can’t help but wonder, with the NX on the horizon, if we’ll be getting it published across both Wii U and the NX. Speaking of.
I want the NX to be amazing. I want it to plunge into the horrendous depths that Nintendo felt itself falling into time and time again in 2015, and I want it to rescue it and beyond. I want the NX to sell out almost everywhere and it become the next big thing. But most of all I want it to earn that. I want the hype to be based on a truly unique and fantastic console that brings something wonderful to the table. The Wii U isn’t a console I dislike or think is awful by any means, but there’s no skirting around that it didn’t live up to a lot of expectations. I want it to be what the Wii U could have been. Give me a portable handheld and a standard console all in one please.
And like Wes mentioned above, I’d adore more Mario Kart 8 DLC, and I know quite a handful of people who think the same. I want Bayonetta in Smash to be usable and I want the amiibo to be good. Don’t go giving her the dreaded Ike-face please.
Most of all though I’d like Nintendo to pick themselves up, dust themselves off, and bounce back to the level of greatness that I know, and that they’ve shown us they can be.
And what will I think happen in 2016? Some mentioned previously. Yooka Laylie for the Wii U, and I think an amiibo coming with it is a very realistic prediction, especially given Rare themselves prototyped interactive figures long ago that were to serve very similar functions to modern day amiibo. I don’t think it would be too far a stretch to say a cross release for both Wii U and NX would occur either.
Speaking of cross releases, like Reuben mentioned, I think there’s little chance that Twilight Princess HD won’t be coming to the NX. I also think we’ll be seeing the birth and release of the NX very, very soon. I’d guess we’ll have a release date at minimum by July, but I think it’ll be in our hands by November.
Given the delayed release in Japan I think that Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash will have some issues with the online lobbies fixed, and then released to the rest of the world too. For mobile, I reckon there’s more coming than just Pokemon: GO and Miitomo, but what they are I don’t think I can say.
I think we’ll be seeing Zelda U very soon, and then again on the NX too. I think we’ll also be getting an amiibo and a special edition (but don’t just recycle some other Zelda shirt and slap some official art on top please), and I don’t think it’s too far a stretch to say we’ll be seeing some DLC for Zelda U.
Out with the old and in with the new. Here’s to a great 2016 for Nintendo!
